CBB Recap 3/7/20
We officially have our first two teams in the Tournament. Today was also full of regular season championship-clinching games for several teams. And like always we had all sorts of upsets. This week was a nice start to what will be an exciting March of College Basketball.
Wisconsin are Big Ten Champions
With Wisconsin’s win over Indiana they have cliched at least a share of the regular-season Big Ten. Maryland and Michigan State will get there chance to join them tomorrow. However, with this win Wisconsin has clinched the 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament next week. This team has put together an impressive resume to finish the season and look like they will make some noise in the NCAA Tournament.
Villanova Hangs On
Three ranked teams found themselves in trouble late. Villanova trailed for most of the second half, but took the lead late and Georgetown missed the game winning shot. This win for Villanova all but seals what little hope Georgetown had of going dancing. This win gave Villanonva a share of the Big East Championship.
Baylor May Have Just Lost There 1 Seed
With Baylor’s loss in Morgantown they most likely lost there 1 seed in the tournament. If so this will be a historic season with 3 mid-majors as 1 seed. That is if Gonzaga, San Diego State, and Dayton all win out. This Baylor team looked really good early in the season, but have struggled ever since there loss to Kansas. If we have learned anything this season it’s that we never know what will happen.
Florida Blew It
At one point in this game Florida lead by as many as 18 points. Unfortunately for them, Kentucky had a different plan. Kentucky battled back and hit the go-ahead shot with 13 seconds on the clock. Even though this win meant nothing for Kentucky’s regular-season title it is a nice win to cap of the season.
Rutgers is Going Dancing... Probably
With Rutgers OT win over Purdue today they get to 20 wins for the first time in program history. Most people believe that will be enough for them to cash their ticket to the big dance. Truthfully the only guaranteed way to get there is to win the Big Ten Tournament, but this Rutgers team looks like they did enough to get there.
Three-Way Tie in the Big East
Creighton takes care of business against Seton Hall to get there share of the Big East title. Creighton has quietly put together a great resume and looks like a team that is ready to make a run. This team is going to make some noise in the tournment.
Northwestern Blows Penn State's Doors Off
Penn State trailed in this one early but were able to get it close going into the half. Unfortunately for them, they came out even slower in the second half. This game really meant nothing for them so who knows what happened. But finishing the season with a loss is never a good thing. Don’t be surprised if this Northwestern team wears these uniforms the entire season next year.
Utah State Clinches There Tournament Spot
For the second year in a row Utah State is headed to the tournament. Most people thought they would have to wait until selection Sunday and hope they did enough to make it. Fortunately for them, they were able to win the Moutain West. We will once again have two Moutain West teams in the tournament.
Belmont is Headed Back to the Big Dance
Last year Murray State took down Belmont in the OVC tournament, but Belmont still got in with an at large bid. This year Belmont won’t have to wait till Selection Sunday to know if they are going to make it. It will be interesting to see who they match up against in the tournament because they have a chance to make a run.
