Central Arkansas vs Austin Peay
Central Arkansas and Austin Peay meet each other in Montgomery, AL for the 2020 FCS Kickoff. This game marks the beginning of a College Football season that will be like none in history. Both of these teams had successful seasons last year with Central Arkansas winning a share of the Southland Conference title, and Austin Peay winning the Ohio Valley outright. That was good enough for both of these teams to make there way into the FCS Playoffs. However, like most college football seasons past success does not translate to future success.
Central Arkansas comes into this game as 5 point favorites. Last year they passed the ball for an average of 292.8 yards per game. While there passing game was strong last year, there rushing game was near the bottom of the FCS. This could be a factor in this game due to potential rain in the area from Hurricane Laura. On the other side of the ball, Central Arkansas has NFL prospect Robert Rochell who had 5 interceptions last season. Central Arkansas will be a tough team to stop if their air attack and defense has anything to do with it.
During Austin Peay’s trip to the Ohio Conference Championship last year they averaged 34.5 points per game. While Austin Peay lost their head coach during the off-season, they do return 14 starters to the field. Last year their defense was able to stop opponents with an FCS low of 20.6 points per game. With defensive line coach Marquase Lovings taking over as interim head coach, this team looks to continue to stop opposing teams. Austin Peay should have no problem keeping up with Central Arkansas in this one.
There are not very many better teams that could be kicking off the FCS football season. With the game being broadcast nationally on ESPN both of these teams are going to be looking to show out. However, I think that Austin Peay has the slight advantage in this game, especially when you are giving them 5 points. This game will really come down to which team is able to finish strongest. My pick for this game is Austin Peay +5.
